    If Pavarotti really wanted to try his hand at Mozart, he should have picked, say, Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte instead of Idomeneo, or Idamante. So much for Pav. There is another major protagonist in this recording that I discover to be below her usual level of performance - Lucia Popp's Ilia/5(7).

    No doubt Pavarotti's singing on this recording is MAGNIFICENT (and he sings the "secondary" role of Idamante, NOT Idomeneo as he later did). I happen to also prefer Idamante sung by a Tenor rather than a Mezzo-soprano. Also as a bonus one gets to hear another great Tenor voice on this recording, Sir Richard Lewis.
